The source text is the H.L. Hix poem "First Husks, Then Shatter", from his collection "As Much as, If Not More Than." The poem incorporates lines from my own artist statement, but I became interested in the lines that correspond to the title, which set up a short call and response. I translated this as a shifting between different fields of color across the surface of each painting. Where Hix mixes and changes meters in his poem, I alter the size of the text as a visual component within the space of each painting.
